DooM - The Darkening
The songs were written by HaloOfTheSun to be used as replacements for the original score to the games Doom II, and Final Doom: Plutonia and TNT. Originally, they were written specifically for the Plutonia version of Final Doom, but they'll work just as well in the others. Of course, this doesn't mean you can't enjoy them outside of playing the game, most of them work well as stand-alone songs.
Here are Halo's own notes on each track:
Level 1- Congo: Starts out as something you really wouldn't expect to hear from a Doom game. That changes though when the strings come in with the chords during the drum solo. It starts to sound more Doom-ish from there. Not really much else to say here.
Level 2- Well Of Souls: Relatively short, but kind of creepy. Sets the mood pretty well for the game.
Level 3- Aztec: This one was actually the first one I had written for this project. It starts out in 5/4 time and then pretty well just stays in 4/4 throughout the rest. Not sure how audible it will be on your speakers, but I think the bass guitar part is pretty cool.
Level 4- Caged: The main melody of this song is something I've had laying around for a while actually. All I did here was add a beginning and just do variations on the theme. This one is one of my favorites so far.
Level 5- Ghost Town: A little different for Doom, but I think it works. This one took the longest to complete. The melody in the very beginning took a while; I just couldn't seem to find the notes I wanted for some reason. Eventually, I settled on what I have, but it still doesn't sound quite right to me. This song is a little different than my usual style, but I think all things considered, this one turned out pretty well.
Level 6- Barons Lair: I think this one is my favorite. It's basically a revamped version of a song I had written for another game. This one doesn't follow the A-B-A pattern most of the others here follow though, and it makes it stand out a little more.
Level 7- Courtyard: Think the beginning sounds a little weird? If you're a musician, you'll understand why when I tell you it's in 7/8. The B section of this song kind of makes me think of Megaman, hehe...
Level 8- Realm: I don't really have much to say on this one; it's mostly just random ideas thrown together. Still an OK song though
Level 9- Abattoire: Very atmospheric in the "A" section. The first part of it has a wah-wah effect added to it, up until the end of the 5/4 section. My favorite part of this song is the church organ. :)
Level 10- Onslaught: Another of my favorites. Although the entire song is in 6/8, there are times it often feels like it's in common time. The last section of this where everything comes back in has that weird feeling of sounding chaotic and not quite fitting together, but still sounding good.
Level 11- Hunted: This one is another of the metal-ish songs on here. Not much to say, except that the last few measures where it sounds almost like it's skipping is because it's in 15/16. Yeah, I like to write in odd time signatures.
Level 12- Speed: Although it starts out like it doesn't quite live up to the title, the "B" section is fairly fast. At least the guitar part anyway. I wasn't too happy with this one at first, but it's been growing on me.
Level 13- The Crypt: This is also a revamped version of something else I'd written. Actually one of the first things I wrote. People seem to like the organ solo in it, so I felt I needed to do it justice be just revitalizing the song.
Level 14- Genesis: The beginning here is actually just the end in reverse. The whole song actually sounds pretty cool in reverse and I almost just made it like that: completely in reverse, but decided against it. This one is very atmospheric as well.
